12/19/2023 0 Comments Ma quincy![]() ![]() The ship is quite large and it’s a labor of love for these volunteers who maintain it. It was a wonderful experience and all the volunteers working on the ship are examples of the warmth, generosity, and patriot spirit of the Boston community.Ī must see if you are in any way interested in Naval history, or even if you aren’t. Another volunteer asked if we've seen the pilot and navigation bridge and gave us directions on which ladders would get us there. ![]() We were lucky to have a beautiful day and many of the hatches were open to help circulate fresh air to normally closed areas of the ship. Later, we saw him again and he took another break from his restoration work to give us a lecture on some of the highlights of the weapons in the museum. He turned them on and showed us that all the equipment was still being used to fabricate parts for the Salem. He asked if I was interested in the machinery and when I said I was, he brought me in and gave a brief talk on each lathe, mill, drill press, and other machines. Like other reviewer's posts, the volunteers doing work on the Salem go out of their way to point out places and facts about the ship.įor example, while there was a "No Admittance" sign on the machine shop, a guy working in there saw me poke my head in the doorway to look around. My wife and I booked a self guided tour but got much more. If you’re in the area and into big ships or history, definitely pay a visit to the USS Salem. It was also really cool to see the dedication and devotion the volunteers had towards the ship, and see some of the ongoing restoration projects they were working on. The ship itself was in more of a “natural” state as compared to some of the other ships (less space devoted to exhibits and overnight camping facilities), which I found far more interesting. Even with all of the COVID going on, Dan (a merchant marine and Salem volunteer/ “restorer”) took the time out of his ship painting/ scraping schedule to give us a very thorough guided tour of the outer and inner portions of the ship. The Salem is massive, and the whole experience seemed a lot more “personal” than the other museum ships. It’s run by a small volunteer operation, and ended being one of the best moments of our east coast “Battleship Tour” (which also included Battleship Cove, the USS New Jersey, and the USS Wisconsin). ![]() In doing research for a trip to the Boston area to visit Battleship Cove, I discovered that the USS Salem is docked in Quincy, about 30 minutes from Boston, and only 45 minutes from Battleship Cove. ![]()
